Sheboygan Chapter Programs

At the local level, our Sheboygan Chapter serves as an outreach center, provides humanitarian aid and hosts international visitors.

Los Ninos Project

In 1994 Donna Webb presented a program at one of our chapter’s dinner meetings explaining a volunteer experience in the Tijuana, Mexico area that was through a non-profit organization, “Los Ninos,” meaning “The Children.” The mission of Los Ninos is to improve the quality of life for children and their families in the border region. As a result of Donna’s presentation, our chapter subsequently elected to participate in what is now called the “Los Ninos Development Education Program.” This action serves as a meaningful chapter outreach project, consistent with People to People’s mission of promoting international understanding through direct people-to-people contacts. Since that time the chapter has continued to support Los Ninos financially and by sending a contingent of workers to Los Ninos. Projects supported were building schools including laying concrete and constructing a terrace to landscape a schoolyard. Learn more.

Travel

People to People's Sheboygan Chapter has taken numerous trips to various parts of Europe. Trips are taken approximately every two years. Our 2005 trip took us to Scandinavia; in 2007 we went to France, and in 2009 we went to Russia. We are tentatively planning our next trip to Greece in 2011. Here are some comments from past members that have traveled abroad:

"This is my first trip with People to People, and my fourth international trip. The people I have met on this trip are becoming family. They are so easy to get along with and are so much FUN." Betty S.

"What a wonderful trip! Just when I think this experience can't be topped, we do something even more memorable." Ann S.

"We have walked more miles and climbed more steps than we have in years, but wouldn't trade this exercise for anything." Shirley L.

The chapter’s first trip took place in 1996 with 10 members participating. Our efforts were geared toward the building of schools and other community-related facilities. We worked side-by-side with local citizens half days, each individual determining his/her own level of physical involvement. This short-term experience (5 days) exposed members to the many aspects of life on the border in combination with cultural events, speakers, discussions, and “hands on” learning/interaction. Participants paid their own room, board, travel, and personal expenses. Our chapter has made repeat trips in 1998, 2000, and 2003.

Our most recent adventure (September 2003) included three work projects during our 5-day stay in Los Alamos, a bustling community bordering Tijuana. Our living quarters could be considered of “dormitory” motif in a Spanish-style structure located within a residential neighborhood. Each workday we were transported, along with all the necessary tools, in two vans and a pickup truck by members of the Los Ninos staff. At each site, we were warmly greeted by and introduced to a group of citizens consisting of parents, children, teachers, and principals representing the local school or community. These groups usually numbered more than fifty people, with language translation provided by Los Ninos staffers. We worked side-by-side with these local people during the morning hours. Work performed at two elementary schools and a community center consisted of hauling materials, mixing, loading, transporting, and ultimately placing of the resultant concrete to expand portions of existing sidewalks, stoops, and playgrounds. All of the work was done by hand. We were provided with hot lunches prepared and served by women of the community. Lunches usually consisted of tortillas, beans, chicken or beef, fresh salsa and hot sauces. Typically, lunches were eaten in a classroom along with the participating parents and children.

After lunch, we were provided with educational activities such as inspecting the U.S./Mexico border, visiting Casa del Migrante (temporary home for migrants), touring a local maquiladora (Free Trade Agreement factory), trying our hand at homemade paper making at Eco Parque (ecological village), meeting with residents of Casa Hogar Santa Teresita (home for young girls under 14 yrs of age), visiting the Tijuana Cultural Center, and shopping on the Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana. The Casa del Migrante and Casa Hogar Santa Teresita visits included dinner with the residents.

Some evenings we had dinner in our living quarters with invited speakers who presented topics such as politics, healthcare, economics, migration, and human rights issues. Lively interaction occurred between members of our group and the guest speakers.

On our last evening in Tijuana, we were invited to dinner at a local restaurant with members of the Los Ninos staff. During that occasion, we presented a $1,000 undesignated donation to Los Ninos on behalf of our chapter. That donation was in addition to the $5,000 previously contributed to their project construction fund for our work visit. We were told our donation would be used for future construction projects.
